Creating a group takes one step: make it, and you get an invite code to share. Anyone who joins with that code appears on the group's own leaderboard, ranked by portfolio return. The group also has a chat, so trades and reasoning are things you talk about in the moment, not just numbers at the end of the month.
Every trade in Fantasy Finance asks for a short reason before it goes through — "why am I doing this?" Friends in your group can see that reason (symbol, trade type, the note you wrote, and when you traded it), which is what turns a leaderboard into a conversation instead of a scoreboard. Nobody sees your position sizes or the prices you paid, so a bold call stays about the call, not about how much you risked.
The thing that makes a stock market game work as a group activity is that nobody starts ahead. Everyone begins each season with $100,000 of virtual capital, and every season resets to $100,000 for everyone — a strong first month does not compound into a permanent lead. Seasons run one calendar month, and you can join partway through one; your return is measured from the day you joined, not from the season's start.
An optional Pro subscription exists for people who want conveniences like fuller season history or bigger groups, but it never buys an edge in the game itself — paying cannot move you up a leaderboard. The ranking is return on capital, and the capital is the same for everyone.
A group is not limited to a handful of large-cap stocks. Fantasy Finance prices US-listed stocks and ETFs, bond ETFs, currencies, commodities, and options (calls and puts) against live market data, so a trade executes at a real, current quote. Short selling is open to everyone — profit is the difference between your entry price and the current price, times quantity — and both long and short positions can be leveraged at 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x if you want to size a conviction up. An order can never cost more than the cash in your account, and a leveraged position closes itself automatically once it has lost 90% of the capital you put into it, so a bad call costs what you risked and nothing more.
A group of friends trading the same live prices tends to produce disagreement fast, which is the useful part. One person shorts a stock the group is bullish on; someone else buys a leveraged position into earnings; the chat is where you find out why, before you find out who was right. At the end of each season, everyone gets a post-mortem: your single best and worst decision (with the reason you wrote for it at the time), how your return compared with simply holding a broad index, and how your capital ended up spread across asset classes. That comparison against an index is often the more honest lesson than the leaderboard position itself.
